Tim,
Scammers use public open proxy servers and exploited computers to connect to the Internet. This prevents you from tracing who they are. They mostly live in Nigeria, Ghana (but, mostly nigerians going there to stop detection). Using Internet café's at night to chat to people in USA, UK and other countries to perform their scamming. The laws in Ghana are relaxed. And its also reported that a lot of Internet Cafe's stay open late (out of hours) knowingly to allow scammers to stay there to try making money.
The best idea to prevent scamming is: A) Do not reply, do not give any details and just delete it. B) Use spam detecting clients / email servers. I use Thunderbird as it has built in spam detection. C) Use a good web browser for protection from fake websites. I use Firefox with addons of Adblock Pro. Also having MyWot.com to detect fake websites. D) If it sounds too good.. WALK AWAY! You're not missing anything, YET!!
Please reply if anyone else finds anything I've missed...
Aiya
