Fake native artifacts are common in old Montreal and old Quebec. Some of these alleged artifacts are actually mass produced in Taiwan. Try to buy products only from Native shops and beware of artifacts that do not have a written explanation of their meaning.
This is a huge tourist destination and thus filled with scammers. Make sure to keep your guard up, especially when you visit the beaches. Do not leave your wallet or cell phone on the beach or when you come back from swimming it might be gone. People on mopeds may run into you and then rob you.
And as in many other countries, the Caribbean has fake police. In the Dominican Republic be weary of poorly fitting uniformed officers in green AMET or military fatigues. Credit card fraud can occur at ATMs. Scammers rig the machine to get your card stuck in the machine or so it takes a photographic image of your card number.
Picket pockets are common especially in Guatemala City and Antigua. They often use the distraction method and work in pairs. In scam, locals act as good Samaritans as a means to rob you. In one instance, they place a nail in your car tire and then stop to help replace your tire. While helping you change your tire, they also rob you.
Like many other countries they have ATM scams. They work very hard to try to get access to your PIN number. At one ATM, they created a pin number box to get into an ATM foyer. So users must enter their PIN number which they in turn record to get to the ATM machine.
